1. After viewing the CRAP Detection 101 Slide Show (Download CRAPP Detection 101) complete an evaluation of a website you will use to research your aquatic species (do question 1 a-d on the Copepod Research Sheet).
Lesson Two
Practice Your Note Taking Skills
Now that you have been assigned your aquatic species, you will begin your research. Before you do, use this Download PracticeNotePad copepod challenge Print Blank to practice. Save it to you H-Drive. Follow your teacher's instructions about how to distinguish between direct quotations and your own paraphrased notes.
1. Copy the passage onto a word document
2. Read for the purpose of finding out about copepods' habitats. (Highlight the key words that tell you about their habitats).
3. Make point form notes on your note sheet from the keywords and ideas you have highlighted.
Here's the passage:
These small aquatic crustaceans are very diverse and are the most numerous metazoans in the water community ("metazoan" means all multi-celled animals). Copepod habitats range from fresh water to hypersaline conditions, from subterranean caves to water collected in bromeliad leaves or leaf litter on the ground and from streams, rivers, and lakes to the sediment layer in the open ocean.
The usual length of adults is 1-2 mm, but adults of some species may be as short as 0.2mm and others may be as long as 10mm or even longer in the case of parasites. Most live in freshwater but a few species are marine. Together the Copepoda and Bracnhiura comprise over 250 described families; 2,600 genera and over 21,000 described species (both valid and invalid, including senior and junior synonyms).

Finding Reliable Sources
We strongly recommend you begin your search with the World Book Junior edition. You'll find it in our Complete List of Databases. Anothr great source is the Animal Diversity Web . Next find a source of your choice that you have determined passes the CRAPP test.
Note Taking
- Download the note taking sheet below.
- Read an entire section, jotting down keywords and main ideas IN YOUR OWN words in the Paraphrase box. Hint: your notes should relate to one of the subtopics: Physical characteristics; Habitat; Food; Life Cycle.
- Place direct quotations in the "Direct Quotations" box.
A Note About Direct Quotations:
Choose them carefully! Cut & paste a maximum of two direct quotations from each article, each of these a sentence AT MOST! Why? Because direct quotations serve a purpose. Here are two that can guide you:
- Quote directly when the author says something so well, you want to share it
- Quote directly to give your work more authority or more power.
If you are quoting something you don't understand, STOP RIGHT THERE! NEVER QUOTE SOMETHING THAT MAKES NO SENSE TO YOU ( unless you are quoting it to show how incomprehnsible the writer is)!
